- SLOVENIA has about 2 million citizens living
on about
25 000 km2; about 50% of its surface is overgrown with forests.
Its geografical position is in the centre of Europe - between the
Adriatic Sea on SW, the Alps on NW, the Panonian lowlands on NE and the Balkan on SE.

These geographical regions give their unique character to
each part of the country, so that you can find all kinds of
scenery in a very small part of land.
The coastal Karst, limestone mountains with the highest
peak Triglav (2864 m), hilly SE and NE with the lazy Mura river - both
with unique vineyards, thermal baths, and finally flat
central part with Ljubljana - the capital.
- LJUBLJANA (300m above sea level) - its roots
may be found thousands of years ago in the Roman settlement called
"Emona". Nowadays, Ljubljana has nearly 300000 citizens and all the
infrastructure usual for a capital.
From Ljubljana there is only 50 km by motorway to the Austrian
border, 80 km to the Italian border, 120 km to the Croatian and 200 km to the Hungarian
border.
- SMARNA GORA - located just 10 km NW from the
center of Ljubljana it is the most important recreational area of the capital and the most
visited mountain in Slovenia. In spite of its name ("gora" means
"mountain") it is just a hill with two peaks: higher Grmada (676m) and lower
Smarna gora (669 m) with an old church and the famous inn.
- The SLOVENE PEOPLE are very closely
connected with different sports. Alpine skiing, mountaineering and climbing,
swimming, athletics, rowing and paddling are the most popular and successful
sports.
- The alternative, so called adrenaline
sports - like mountainbiking, rafting, boarding
and freeclimbing are also very popular, particularly among the young generation.
The olympic medalists and athletes like Davo Karnicar, who was the first
man ever to ski from MtEverest in Nov. 2000, enjoy great reputation in our
society.
