The trail over Spodnja Kuhna (The trail over the roots)
In the period when Gora has been visited mainly by pilgrims walking this steep path was more an exception than a rule, but today it is no doubt the most frequented trail to Šmarna gora and probably most visited climbing route in Slovenia. We start at the parking area over Sava in Tacen, continue on the road to Pirniče to the first turn when the road turns to left. On this turn we choose the street on the right and then after approximately 200 metres on the left we see the inn Grad. On the right right by the fence of the Inn Grad we take a narrow path to the foot of Gora. The trail will take you almost directly over the roots. When we come to the first bigger plain we have reached Spodnja kuhinja, were there is also a division that offers us several ways: left – Mazi's trail to Grmada, right – The Pilgrim's or the walking trail or straight forward – to continue the way over the roots. The trail will quite steeply take us to the crossroads where The Pilgrim trails joins from the right side. On the crossroads we go left and follow the path that takes us past the chapel at Turk's Butt to the saddle. From the saddle we continue our way on the road to the top.

The Pilgrim's trail
The trail starts in Tacen at the village church and scales on the asphalt road among the houses. When the asphalt road ends you turn left and then immediately right, follow the cart track up to the plague column and then left up the gorge past the saddle to the top. The trail's name tells us it has been used by pilgrims. Today it is not often visited, the lower part is nevertheless used more as it is an asphalted road, but the other parts are quite muddy.

The trail to Grmada over Spodnja Kuhna and Zatrep and Mazi's trail
Usually we start walking this trail to Grmada in Tacen by the inn Grad; firstly follow the Trail over the roots, at the first bigger plain (Spodnja Kuhinja) you turn left to Zatrep where Mazi's trail starts. You follow this trail to the gorge of Grmada where you join the Trail of Wester and continue on it till the top of Grmada. Especially Mazi's trail is one of the nicest trails on Šmarna gora and/or Grmada. It is distinguished by beautiful views of the Ljubljana basin and the fact that after the rainfall or snow it dries really quickly so it is seldom muddy.

The Freedom trail / The walking trail
The trail is meant for easy walking, the first ideas (1946) that it has no bigger differences in height around all Šmarna gora and Grmada. It actually starts in Vikrče, where a part of the way from the Path of Wester over Zatrep is most gradually scaling, later on the Freedom The trail continues over the cart tracks and paths between Spodnja and Zgornja Kuhinja, crosses the Pilgrim trail, Partisan Trail and continues on gradual cart tracks till the Skaručna trail in the steep part of Šmarna gora. From Turk's chapel we continue the trail on the gradual path to Saddle or on very steep trail to the top of Šmarna gora.
