The shortest way to Gora has always been a special challenge for record seekers. Alpinists, athletes, cyclists, footballers, skirunners and others – all sports people from the near and far vicinity of Ljubljana have for ages tested themselves on Šmarna gora steep slopes and non-formally races themselves to see who is the fastest.
Also because we wanted to end the rumour about the unlikely ascents under ten minutes, we have decided to find the fastest one.
The "Record" was organised in 1991 for the first time as the spring variant of the classical Šmarna gora Run. In the same year in the autumn the traditional Run was supposed to happen, but the events of that year's July that took our nation to its independence, prevented it.
In the winter of 1996 the idea of organising Record arose again but its source was totally different. On February 1st 1995 one of us, friends of Šmarna gora, died in an accident in Slovene mountains.
So every first Saturday in February the Slovene Mountain Running community meets under Gora – to socialise, to race and also to pay homage to Tomo, even though not everybody present knows the latter reason.
The record is dedicated to Tomo who trained his body and soul on the slopes of Šmarna gora, just behind his home.
